Encrypting laptop?
pussy cat | Posted 5:58am 10. June 2008 Server Time |

I need to encrypt some laptop whihc will contain sensitive information.

I need a good secure but easy to use system.

I'd like something that has a usb key to enable the laptop to be used if avaliable.

Anyone got any ideas / options.

Use TrueCrypt, i started using it this year. It is VERY VERY good!

You basically make an encrypted "container file" (which is one big file), then you mount the file as a drive on your computer (i.e you end up with a X: drive), then you can use that drive just like any other.  The encryption works on the fly, so anything you put on the X: drive is encrypted.  When you are finished using the drive, you unmount it. This'll take away the X: drive.  The "container file" will be full of all your files and folders etc (but inaccessable unless its remounted again as an actual drive), and of course, to mount the "container file" into a drive you need to know the password.

It gets better... if you want you can put an entire harddrive partition inside a "container file" (so in theory an entire installation of windows can live inside it)... but to keep it simple, use the method above.

Lastly... it has something called "Plausible Deniability".  Imagine your encrypted container file is found and you are forced to give the password - the container can use 2 passwords, hehehe! 1 password will open up the container file and show what looks like your sensitive information (but its fake info), the other password is the real password to the real sensitive info... so all you do is give the bully/law the password to the fake sensitive info.  Coool huh!?

Oh, and best of all, its OPEN SOURCE!... http://www.truecrypt.org
