ASP.Net is a technology that evolved from classic ASP using the .Net Framework. The .Net framework has several versions (each version improving on the last and adding additional librarys and resorting), and the most popular framework for a while was the .Net 1.1 Framework. However the .Net 2.0 framework is very popular now and has made the world of web development change dramatically especially using AJAX etc. People now tend to call this style of webdesign "Web 2.0".
Since this progression things have continued to improve and recently the framework has reached version 3.0 and 3.5 which is not 100% supported just yet. However from 2.0 onwards the world or web development will thrive from the new ways things can be done (web development wise) as if they were local applications on your computer unlike before.
Web 2.0 (3.0/3.5) is the future baby! :)
